The main ultrasound programs offered by various training schools across the state are the Associate and Bachelor’s degree courses. You can qualify for a job by selecting a short course or a four-year program and specialize in a particular field. You learn how to use special equipment and take videos and images of the internal structures. You should be able to identify body parts such as kidneys and livers, or spot thyroids and rare developments when they appear on screens, or when taking an x-ray.
Towards the end of the training program, you will have to attend clinical classes in a hospital or doctor’s clinic where you will interact with patients to gain practical experience. You will learn how to use diagnostic imaging practices in various general fields including cardiac and vascular. You learn how to monitor health issues such as signs of stroke, cancer or blood clots. Training is also given on maintain medical records of patients and capturing quality images with clear pictures which are then captured as still images or on video for the physician to diagnose.
Basic Educational Requirement for Ultrasound Technician
The basic educational requirement for ultrasound technicians is completing an accredited course and passing the exam. There are over 176 certified training programs for passing this course. Courses are offered by various community colleges, hospitals, universities, U.S military and vocational institutes. Subjects such as anatomy, medical ethics, physics, patient care and physiology are covered in the courses. If you have a background in natural sciences, you can easily get admission for the course.
Once you complete your ultrasound technician courses, you will have to register with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) by appearing for an exam that will test your career skills. This will help you to choose various job options that will present themselves when you apply for a post of a diagnostic medical sonographer.
